On behalf of The Kaufman Law Firm posted in Sexual Harassment on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

A complaint issued by the state Commission on Judicial Performance shows is that Jeffery W. Johnson, a Second District Court of Appeal justice, is facing serious allegations. Among the claims are numerous acts of sexual harassment committed by Justice Johnson in the workplace.

The claims date back more than a decade to his time as a federal magistrate and he has denied all of them.

One allegation is that Johnson harassed his fellow Second District Court Justice Victoria Chaney. The complaint says that he was intoxicated one night and refused to leave her hotel room after a dinner together. The harassment of Chaney allegedly continued for years. The complaints against Johnson are numerous and even include some by law enforcement personnel assigned to protect him.

At the Kaufman Law Firm, we are dedicated to helping those who face this kind of harassment in their workplace. If you need a Los Angeles sexual harassment attorney, contact us today so we can work on securing the compensation you need.

Is It Really Sexual Harassment?

We know that sexual harassment takes on many forms and rarely ever looks the same for people who experience it. Any unwanted sexual conduct, whether physical or non-physical, is sexual harassment. Let’s look at some of the things that are included:

  • Any unwanted touching
  • Kissing
  • Groping
  • Brushing of hair
  • “Accidental” bumps into people
  • And more

When it comes to non-physical harassment, it can be a bit harder to define but is just as detrimental to the people who experience it.

It can be comments from coworkers:

  • “Wow, those pants show off everything you have.”
  • “I know how you’re getting promoted.”
  • “I’ll make sure you get that raise if you do something for me.”

You can see that sexual harassment can be veiled statements that imply references to sex and sexual favors. It can also be a person continually asking a person out even after they have firmly said no. In the worst cases, this harassment can become stalking behavior.

Studies show that as much as 27 percent of American adult women have been sexually harassed in the workplace and as many as 80% of people admit that sexual harassment takes place at their place of work.

The state of California has new laws in place that make it harder for companies in the state to push allegations of sexual harassment under the rug, so we are hopeful they make a difference in workplace culture.
