Suit involving 20 injured and one fatality is settled

Safety procedures are studied and enacted for a reason: safety. This is especially true in high-risk jobs like firefighting, policing and construction. Unfortunately, there will always be companies that put profit and deadlines ahead of their workers' lives. It is due to this sad reality that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regularly updates its safety guidelines and investigates employers that fail to implement them. One such employer was found to have ignored the safety guidelines and several workers paid the price.

New rule extends overtime to 4.2 million workers

Overtime is a type of pay that you are entitled to when you work more than full time. There are many rules, but, in general, you are entitled to it when you work more than 40 hours a week. If you work more than these hours, then you are entitled to "time and a half" for each hour worked over the threshold. Generally, salaried workers are exempt from overtime rules. The effect is that many low-paid "white-collar" workers like administrators work more than 40 hours a week but do not receive overtime.

It is debatable whether or not trade costs jobs on the whole but it is very clear that it does cost some jobs in certain industries, like garment and steel. In response to these job losses, the federal government started several initiatives to offset some of the effects of foreign trade. One of the largest of these programs, Trade Adjustment Assistance, has numerous methods to assist you if you lost your job. This article will go over those benefits and how you may access them.

Uber lawsuit settles

The "gig" economy is continually evolving. Government regulators, industry insiders and workers do not know what, if any, protections extend to "gig" workers. Are they entitled to a minimum wage? Are they employees or independent contractors? How do they fit into the tax system? Should a new classification of worker be invented that blends employee and contractor rules? Uber and several thousand drivers just settled a major lawsuit that may partially answer some of these questions.
